Dr. Stephen R. Nagy is a Professor at the Department of Politics and International Studies at the International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, where he has been teaching and researching international relations and Indo-Pacific regional dynamics for over 25 years. From November 2009 to January 2014, he served as an Assistant Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), further honing his expertise in the region’s shifting political, economic, and security landscapes.

Fluent in English, Japanese, and French, with proficiency in reading Chinese, Dr. Nagy earned his PhD in International Relations from Waseda University. His academic mission focuses on bridging the gap between scholarship, policy, and public discourse to advance knowledge and foster dialogue on the Indo-Pacific’s challenges and opportunities. As an expert in Sino-Japanese relations, regional economic integration, and security strategies, he has published extensively across peer-reviewed journals, policy platforms, and media outlets. His research topics include Japanese and Chinese foreign policy and middle power approaches to navigating great power competition.

Dr. Nagy’s prominent roles extend beyond academia. He is a Senior Fellow and China Project Lead at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute (MLI), a Senior Fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, and a Visiting Fellow at the Japan Institute for International Affairs (JIIA). As Director of Policy Studies for the Yokosuka Council of Asia Pacific Studies (YCAPS), he leads their Indo-Pacific Policy Dialogue Series.

With over 100 academic publications, Dr. Nagy has established himself as a leading authority on Indo-Pacific geopolitics.
